Fifth Class are learning about renewable energy. Renewable energy comes from natural resources that are naturally replenished, such as sunlight, wind and waves. We focused on wind energy this week. We discovered that wind turbines are used to convert wind energy to electricity. The wind blows the blades around and this movement is converted into electricity. A group of wind turbines is called a wind farm. We made paper wind cars and raced them in the yard. We have also learned about geothermal energy, hydro-power energy and biomass energy. Geothermal energy is thermal energy generated and stored in the earth. Hydro-power energy is energy hat comes from moving water. Biomass energy can be obtained from burning natural waste materials such as scrap pieces of wood, dead trees and unused parts of crops. We will examine non-renewable energy sources such as coal, oil, and gas. Non-renewable energy comes from natural resources that are not naturally replenished. Energy is our main focus area for Green Schools this year.
