Our Physical Education Programme
The PE programme in St. Matthew’s incorporates all six strands – Athletics, Dance, Gymnastics, Games, Aquatics and Outdoor and Adventure activities.
At St Matthew’s, each class receives at least an hour per week of physical education.
Our targeting of the Active School Flag has helped us to focus on an improved provision of Physical Education in the school. Our staff have come to recognise the difference between physical education and physical activity. For further information on our PE programme, please see our School Policies.
This year, as part of the ASF initiative, it was decided to select games as the strand for development. Our new hall enabled us to give greater focus and attention to this strand of the PE curriculum. We also decided as a staff that games in timetabled PE time should be more than running around. With this said, all teachers are ensuring that each game being played is grounded in a functional movement skill; with the goal being the child’s developing physical literacy. The programme is all-inclusive and accessible to all children.
